The Soft Selection: December Special

December carries its own quiet magic. Our senses sharpen, our minds hum with preparations, and everything seems to move a little faster as Christmas and the holiday season approach.

In this month’s Soft Selection, our Marketing Responsible, Ann, shares her favourite winter ritual — the one that helps her stay grounded when everything else speeds up.

The Mood, the Food & the Scents

For me, the first hint of winter is also the sign that ice-bathing season is beginning again. I swim all year round, and I love watching how the water, the light, and the landscape shift with each season. But in winter, it turns into more than just a swim — it becomes a ritual. Every week, I meet up with others, we heat up in the sauna, and then plunge into the icy water.

Part of my ritual is sauna aromatherapy: heat, ice, essential oils, and soft music working together to calm both body and mind. Scents have this incredible ability to unlock memories, especially in a warm, quiet room where everyday noise is shut out and people naturally fall silent. It becomes a small sanctuary, a moment to check in with yourself.

Whenever I use musk during a session, someone always asks, “What is that scent? It felt like being hugged by someone I know.” It often reminds them of a mother, grandmother, or another loved one, because musk was once such a popular women’s perfume. It’s beautiful how a fragrance can carry a whole life of memories.

Stepping out of the icy water, nothing feels better than wrapping yourself in soft, warm layers. I never go without my Roman blouses, they are the perfect base layer on cold skin and ideal for building warmth on top. It’s a small comfort that makes a big difference.

My favourite winter scent combinations:

- Blood orange, cedar wood & eucalyptus
- Pine, clove & orange
- Lavender, lemon balm & rosemary

Many of the aromas I use come straight from nature or even from the kitchen. I adore the scent and taste of oranges, grapes, and lemons. Their freshness cuts through all the heaviness of winter’s sweet Christmas treats. Every year, I make oranges or lemons studded with cloves. We did it when I was a child, and the moment the scent fills the room, I’m transported right back to those memories.
