International Women’s Day x Waiting for Monday
We celebrate International Women’s Day through stories of inspiring women. This year we’ve visited the empowering women behind the creative design bureau Waiting for Monday, who followed their dream and started their own business.
WHY DID YOU WISH TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
By starting Waiting for Monday we wanted to create a workplace where you, as the name implies, can’t wait to get up and get to work Monday morning.
We are passionate about design and interior and we create design solutions with meaning and with an ethical and aesthetic eligibility. On top of that we wanted to decide for ourselves, have fun and create something we’re proud of.
The design industry can be a bit posh and we want to break out of that. We want to show a less self-important side of the industry where everything isn’t storytelling and always the perfect version. We want to pass on our energy and find an immediacy like “This is very nice” or “This makes me laugh” with the recipient. Our Monday-stories are a great example of this.
HOW WAS THE CHANGE TO LIFE AS SELF-EMPLOYED?
We talked and visioned the project over a half year time and then one day we looked at each other and was like “Let’s do it! What’s the worst that can happen?”. From there it quickly took off. We had all the visions for the bureau but jumped into it without knowing exactly what it would imply. We know the direction but we’re learning through the process.
We have a mentor to look at us in another perspective and see the things we don’t. We’ve felt the strength in getting a push and help from people outside who believe in our project and who thinks we’re cool and want to help our progress.
WHAT IS THE MOST TERRIFYING WITH BEING SELF-EMPLOYED?
You don’t have a fixed income and we need to face the things we’re not so good at like sales and administration. There’s no mercy - we have to do it. We’re both creative people so it’s a steep learning progress on new skills, but it’s great and strengthens us.
Network can also be a terrifying, but necessary thing. To use your connections and reaching out to people you don’t know is something to overcome in the beginning.
WHAT IS THE DREAM JOB TO DO FOR A CLIENT?
There will always be people and companies you would like to work with but it’s more about the
project. We contribute and enriches a project by diving into the creative process and work from the framework of the project. There will always be guidelines we need to keep but we find the opportunities and max out from there. It’s in this space we create the great results – the result clients wished for but didn’t know how looked. Design will always have limits and boundaries otherwise it would be art.
WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP ON YOUR JOURNEY AS SELF-EMPLOYED
We’re still in the take-off phase and on our way up where the air must carry us. We don’t have one end goal as we see ourselves on a binary journey without end destination. We need to constant develop and enjoy the process on the way.
